Thanksgiving 2019
Thanksgiving 2019
Another fabulous Holiday Meal for the hundreds of people we serve at Our Place. Thanksgiving is always a treat at Our Place as local dignitaries, media and volunteers serve up an extra-special, home-cooked meal to make everyone feel like family.
Around 600 of Victoria’s most vulnerable citizens joined Our Place’s family table for a special Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday, Oct. 8 through the generous support of donors, community groups and volunteers. Local politicians and media representatives from TV, radio and print rolled up their sleeves to dish out a full meal of turkey, potatoes, garden veg and all the trimmings.
“For many people who are struggling, we’re the closest thing to family they have,” says Don Evans, Chief Executive Officer of Our Place. “Thanksgiving is a special time to be with loved ones and we want everyone to feel a sense of belonging and enjoy a great meal.”
This year also marks an incredible 30 years of running the kitchen for Brian Cox, manager of food services. Brian is a pro at creating tasty meals for the masses on a limited budget. Brian first joined Our Place in 1989, back when it was the Upper Room, and ran a kitchen that was about a tenth of the size of the one he supervises now.
“I love it,” says Brian. “The Our Place family really appreciates that we deliver such a special feast for them at this important time of year.”
Our Place kitchen staff was busy preparing an estimated 1,000 lbs of turkey, 500 lbs of potatoes, 250 lbs of stuffing, 200 lbs of vegetables, 25 gallons of gravy, 55 lbs of cranberry sauce, 125 pumpkin pies and 1,500 cups of coffee.
